Commercial Law and Lawyers

Commercial law covers a vast number of processes, contracts and transactions within business including accounting, financing, management and operations and trade. Commercial law is sometimes referred to as business law. As it covers many functions within a business, it overlaps into other practice areas and can involve a great deal of variety. There are often international elements to these transactions and you should have a keen interest in business and have a good business mind to get a legal job in commercial law.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Yes, these are extremely valuable skills to develop if you want to work in-house.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - No.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - The larger firms all have commercial contracts lawyers but if you are looking for less support roles and more front line work then the mid sized commercial law firms are a better option. There are some excellent smaller and boutique firms.

  4. Can I use my skills as a commercial lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - It is not easy, you are more likely to do business overseas than secure work in a foreign law firm as local legal knowledge is more preferable.
