Construction Law and Lawyers

Construction law can be divided into two elements; non-contentious & contentious issues. It involved residential work, commercial developments and government projects. Non-contentious construction law involves helping clients at the stage prior to and during any building work and this would require you to pull together all the contractual relationships involved, make sure all planning consents are obtained and manage any tender processes. Contentious issues involve resolving any disputes that may occur during the construction process. Although you can choose which section of construction law you wish to specialise in, it is possible to work across both. Many construction lawyers have a background in, interest or experience in engineering.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Yes, of course it is more likely that these jobs would be for developers or construction companies.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - It is helpful to have a balance of front end and back end work but it depends on the nature of work at your firm.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - Construction law departments are across the large firms, firms with specialist property and projects practices and of course there are a few niche construction law firms.

  4. Can I use my skills as a construction lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - Yes, local knowledge is important but these skills are transferrable. Particularly to other common law areas, and regions undergoing major infrastructure and development projects such as SE Asia and the Middle East.
