Employment lawyers cover a range of issues which arise in the workplace. These include pension and superannuation schemes, breaches of contract, redundancy issues, diversity and employer/employee relationships. Some of this work is advisory such as in the implementation of new regimes or adhering to legislation and a significant part involved litigation such as for harassment and discrimination. This area of law is constantly evolving due to regularly changing legislation.
- Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Yes. Many large corporations have in-house legal teams and one particular area is employment law.
- Do I need to specialise? - It is helpful to have a balance of front end and back end work but it depends on the nature of work at your firm.
- What type of law firm can I work in? - There are some specialist employment law firms and many general commercial firms have employment law departments. The large international firms have employment law practices either as a stand alone unit or to support the transactional groups such as Corporate.
- Can I use my skills as an employment lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - While the skills are transferrable abroad, there is a not a huge demand.
