Energy Law and Projects Law

Although technically two different areas, they are related. Energy lawyers advise on issues relating to the production and distribution of energy such as oil & gas, power being nuclear, coal, and electricity. Green energy includes wind farms. Projects law involves both the commercial development and financing of private and government funded projects such as schools, hospitals, infrastructure, military bases. The overlay with energy comes in the form of energy projects. Energy Lawyers and Projects Lawyers can easily work overseas. They require very good analytical, contract negotiation and management skills.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Yes, of course it is more likely that these jobs would be for developers or construction companies.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - You will either be a projects or energy lawyer. You could be an oil and gas lawyer and also specialise in upstream work. Similarly you could be specialise in project finance or commercial projects. Some firms prefer different skill sets and this also changes depending on the region in which you may work.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - Specialist firms and the major international firms tend to have the strongest practices.

  4. Can I use my skills as an employment lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - Yes, some local knowledge is important particularly on the tendering and procurement when dealing with Government bodies but these skills are generally transferrable. Particularly to other common law areas, and regions undergoing major infrastructure, power and development projects such as in Europe, particularly Germany, Hong Kong, SE Asia, Australia and the Middle East.
