Family Law and Lawyers

Family law includes matrimonial law and the law relating to children. Some of the most high profile lawyers around the world are family lawyers, especially those 'divorce' lawyers. Family Lawyers must have a high level of patience, be skilled negotiators and have an abundance of empathy.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - There are not many employers who would need a family lawyer aside from Government departments and agencies.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - Most family lawyers have a general practice but some will specialise especially in relation to the needs of children.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - Specialist family law firms and private client firms.

  4. Can I use my skills as a family lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - It is unlikely, there is not much demand for overseas qualified family lawyers.
