Intellectual Property Law and Lawyers

Intellectual Property (IP) lawyers advise clients on all aspects of their Intellectual Property assets. You can protect IP assets by having patents, trademarks, design rights and copyrights put into place, these can be locally, regionally or globally. Patent Agents are entirely different and although they may be lawyers they do not need to be. A huge amount of accuracy is needed to work within this discipline and almost always a science degree or background as well.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Yes, of course it is more likely that these jobs would be for large corporations which have significant IP assets.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - There may be some degree of specialisation but many IP lawyers work across a range of services. The exception being a Patent Agent.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - Many large commercial firms have IP departments and there are also some specialist practices.

  4. Can I use my skills as to get similar jobs overseas? - It is possible albeit rare that IP lawyers find similar jobs overseas. The main reasons being that employers tend to look for very specific skill sets which usually have a local focus.
