Tax Law and Lawyers

Tax lawyers advise corporations, private individuals and governments on all aspects of direct and indirect taxation. They tend to specialise in corporate taxation law, sales tax or private client advice. You need to have very strong analytical skills, a calm demeanour and very good academics to get jobs in tax law. Tax lawyers work with their colleagues across most practice areas especially banking, corporate and capital markets. The large accountancy practices also hire law graduates as tax managers as there is a significant overlap between the work of tax accountants and tax lawyers.

  1. Are these skills transferrable to in-house legal jobs? - Although the skills of a tax lawyer are transferrable, it is more likely that in house jobs would be in Government or the Financial Services industry.

  2. Do I need to specialise? - There are various specialities such as sales tax, direct and indirect tax, corporate taxation, private client advice.

  3. What type of law firm can I work in? - The larger commercial firms all have tax practices either as stand alone department or in a corporate support role.

  4. Can I use my skills as a tax lawyer to get similar jobs overseas? - Possibly but only in countries where the tax regimes are similar.
