Why are employers using jobsites instead of agencies?

There may have been times in your life when you've felt you were perfectly suited to a role however low and behold it slips through your fingers. This can usually happen for a number of reasons that were out of your control. If you’re a jobseeker it is vital that you understand the mind set and influences of your potential employer. If you understand not only what an employer wants but also the latest trends in hiring and what decisions they face during the hiring process, then you're far closer to landing your dream role than the average person.

Employers use a range of tools when looking for candidates and the developments in digital media have added to their options. They work with traditional recruitment consultants, through their own careers portal on their website, through social media platforms and using jobsites. There are two main types of jobsites, traditional jobsites (such as Seek and Reed) and now the more recent recruiter free jobsites (such as twosteps and wherewomenwanttowork). Agency free jobsites only allow employers to advertise jobs and do not let recruitment consultants to post jobs which means all roles are genuine, individual and still active.

You may have noticed more of these recruiter free jobsites emerging over the last year or so as employers get more savvy at cutting costs. If you use an agency free jobsite rather than a recruitment consultant you'll score extra brownie points with an employer, as you'll have saved them thousands in fees. Why do you think so many employers prefer hiring internal staff over external staff? Not only do they make substantial cost savings but they save on the time and training it takes to introduce a new person to a business and settle them in.

Jobseekers need to understand that if an employer is choosing between two perfect candidates and one came through a zero commission jobsite and then other comes from a 20% fee recruiter...what do you think they would do? If I was confident that both could fit within the company perfectly yet one had a £10,000 or $10,000 fee attached to them, I know which one I would choose!

Now, I'm not suggesting recruitment consultants don't play their part in the world of hiring anymore, but as the digital world continues to evolve and people and businesses become better connected, it starts to narrow the need for agencies in every occupational field.

I've put together a summary of the pros and cons of using agency free jobsites and recruitment agencies to help you make an informed decision when looking for your next great employer.

Recruiter Free Jobsite - Positives

  • All jobs in one place.
  • Direct contact with employers which usually means direct negotiations.
  • No middle man influencing your decisions or choices to what will benefit them.
  • No mixed communications.
  • No misunderstanding of skills.
  • All jobs are genuine.
  • All jobs are individual.
  • All jobs are active and live.
  • Employers would prefer to recruit through a job board because it costs them a fraction of a recruitment consultant cost.
  • Jobsites allow you to set up automated job alerts for your ideal job. This means you’ll never miss news of when your dream job is uploaded to the jobsite.

Recruitment agencies - Positives

  • Less work for you to do. Once you have done your CV you can just send it to a recruiter and they will search for jobs on your behalf.
  • You have someone on the end of a phone that you can direct any questions to.

Recruiter Free Jobsites - Negatives

  • You will have to register with the site, upload your CV and apply for jobs yourself.
  • You will be responsible for finding jobs online.
  • You may have to chase an employer yourself rather than have a recruiter do this for you, however a good jobsite will tell you where you are in the hiring process with each role you've applied for.

Recruitment agencies - Negatives

  • They charge employers between 15-30% of your salary if they choose you.
  • All negotiations go on between you and the recruiter and then the recruiter and the employer as opposed to directly between you and the employer.
  • Recruiters have their own agenda and motives for matching candidates with roles and will be more pushy towards employers that will pay them the biggest fee.
  • When recruiters and headhunters have never worked themselves in the field that they recruit in, it can mean some specialist skills get over looked or misunderstood.
  • Bad recruiters have been known to cut corners in understanding clients needs before sending over cvs that do not fit the organisational culture of a business.
  • Bad recruiters can often be clutching at straws and sending unsuitable cvs over to an employer when they are unwanted.

Being a recruiter free jobsite our self, you could say we'd be a bit prejudiced so feel free to email enquiry@twosteps.com to point out anything I've missed off!
