The University of Sydney is a leading, comprehensive research and teaching university committed to harnessing the transformative power of education and to fostering greater knowledge and a better understanding of the world and its people. Through critical analysis, intellectual leadership and active contribution to public debate, the University is highly influential in shaping Australia’s national and international agenda and delivering solutions to the challenges facing our society.
Our primary objective is to create and sustain a university in which, for the benefit of both Australia and the wider world, the brightest researchers and the most promising students, whatever their social or cultural background, can thrive and realise their full potential.
This central purpose underpins our strategic goals and challenges us to develop and support a community of scholars, where interdisciplinary research can flourish and where the student experience is enriched by membership of that community.

Our research
We rank among the top 1 percent of research universities in the world. In the first round of the recently completed Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) rankings, 92 percent of our research was rated as being at world class or above.
According to the latest available figures, the University of Sydney received the largest amount of National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) project grant funding in 2010, a total of $52.7 million. We also received the second largest amount of 2010 Australian Research Council Discovery Project grant funding at $33 million, including more than 102 Discovery Projects and nine Linkage Projects.
Our teaching and learning
The University of Sydney attracts highly talented undergraduate and postgraduate students, drawn by our comprehensive range of quality degrees and a strong track record for postgraduate research programs. Our students study alongside top researchers, and in some cases contribute to their research. We expect them to excel, and challenge them to succeed as leaders in whatever career field they choose.
OUR CAMPUS
Located close to the heart of Australia’s largest and most international city, our Camperdown/Darlington Campus features a mixture of iconic Gothic-revival buildings and recently completed state-of-the-art teaching, research and student support facilities. The University also has an extensive footprint throughout Sydney, and some faculties are based on Camperdown/Darlington but have facilities elsewhere – Veterinary Science and Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, for instance, make use of farms and research units at the Camden Campus, while the Medical School has clinical schools in hospitals throughout the whole city. Other faculties have their own dedicated campuses: in the city (Sydney Conservatorium of Music and Dentistry); at Rozelle (Sydney College of the Arts); and at Lidcombe (Health Sciences).
Our researchers and students have access to excellent library resources, and a project to develop new technology-enabled learning environments on the Camperdown/Darlington Campus is underway.
